This is the most spread-out and the one that you will notice first. I remembered walking everywhere, taking the metro or dolmu\u015f without worrying to be pickpocketed<\/a> or being robbed<\/a>. I used to go to a party in the disco and return at 2am by foot without worrying at all. Comparing to other countries, I feel that the safety is not necessary due of the repression of its police, but to the culture of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Este es el m\u00e1s difundido y el primero que notar\u00e1s. Recuerdo caminar por todo lugar, tomar el metro o dolmu\u015f sin preocuparme por carteristas<\/a> o ladrones<\/a>. Yo sol\u00eda ir a una fiesta en la discoteca y regresar a pie a las 2 de la ma\u00f1ana sin preocuparme para nada. Comparando con otros pa\u00edses, yo siento que la seguridad no es necesariamente por la represi\u00f3n de su polic\u00eda, sino por la cultura de las personas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Comparing to a previous experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
?? I lived in Germany before, in 2008 and 2009, and you can feel a similar air of safety in the streets. Even though, it is not as authentic as the one that it is felt on Turkey. There are more thefts (without violence) than actual assaults, for sure; one of the most spread-out examples: bicycle thefts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Yo viv\u00ed antes en Alemania, en el 2008 y 2009, y t\u00fa puedes sentir un aire similar de seguridad en las calles. A\u00fan as\u00ed, no es tan aut\u00e9ntico como el que es sentido en Turqu\u00eda. Hay m\u00e1s hurtos (sin violencia) que asaltos, seguro que s\u00ed; uno de los m\u00e1s difundidos: robo de bicicletas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? I have lived most of my life in Ecuador and there is no such comparison point of safety. It depends in the province where you live. For example, you feel a natural paranoia if you are walking after 7pm; there is a chance that you get robbed. The safety is usually proportional to the amount of people walking on that street. But this an entire chapter by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? He vivido la mayor\u00eda de mi vida en Ecuador y no hay tal punto de comparaci\u00f3n. Depende de la provincia donde vivas. Por ejemplo, t\u00fa sientes una paranoia natural si est\u00e1s caminando despu\u00e9s de las 7pm; existe una probabilidad que seas robado. For example, a neighborhood store locate the ice cream, potato chips, newspaper and other goods completely outside. It turns out that people check out a product that they want to buy, they grab it (nobody is watching) and they go inside and pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Muchas tiendas tienen sus productos fuera de la tienda. Por ejemplo, una tienda de barrio ubican el helado, las papas fritas, el peri\u00f3dico y otros bienes completamente fuera. Resulta ser que la gente inspecciona un producto que quiere comprar, lo toman (nadie est\u00e1 viendo) y van adentro de la tienda para pagar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it isn't like this everywhere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
?? Unfortunately, this is reality is different in many countries around the world, including mine. Many, MANY stores have their goods inside to prevent theft. Many people have the vice to steal or take it away, for whatever reason (as sport or to take advantage of somebody else).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Desafortunadamente, esta es una realidad diferente en muchos pa\u00edses alrededor del mundo, incluyendo el m\u00edo. Muchas, MUCHAS tiendas tienen sus bienes dentro para evitar robos. Muchas gente tiene el vicio de robar o llevarse por cualquier raz\u00f3n (como deporte o para tomar ventaja de los dem\u00e1s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Safety when you ride the bus, metro or dolmu\u015f<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a term in german (because germans are very funny inventing terms) called ‘Schwarzfahren<\/em>‘, which means literally “riding black”. This happens you get in a train, bus or any other public transportation vehicle and you don\u2019t pay for the ticket. There are inspectors who, from time to time, they check if everybody inside the vehicle have bought the corresponding tickets. If someone haven\u2019t, this person have a punishment like paying a fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Existe un t\u00e9rmino en alem\u00e1n (porque los alemanes son muy divertidos al crear t\u00e9rminos) llamado ‘Schwarzfahren<\/em>‘, que quiere decir “viajar negro”. Esto ocurre cuando viajas en tren, bus u otro transporte p\u00fablico y no pagas por el boleto. Existen inspectores quienes, de vez en cuando, revisan si la gente ha pagado su boleto. Si alguien no lo hizo, reciben un castigo como pagar una multa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What if there were no inspector?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
?? I found out something amazing about turkish buses. ‘Almost' everyone pays their buses tickets and there aren\u2019t inspectors checking if someone didn\u2019t. Two Italians friends rode with me once on the bus before they bought their bus cards. They were expecting to have problems if you inspector eventually showed up but I told them “There isn't such guy since it is expected that everyone does it<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Descubr\u00ed algo asombroso en los buses turcos. ‘Casi' todos pagan por tu boleto y no hay inspectores revisando si alguien no lo hizo. 2 amigos italianos viajaron conmigo en un bus una vez antes que ellos compraran sus tarjetas de bus. Ellos estaban esperando tener problema con el inspector si asomaba eventualmente pero les cont\u00e9 “No hay ese tipo ya que se espera que todos lo hagan<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? What if you enter the bus by the rear entrance? Then you go by the bus driver and pay. What if the bus is full and you can\u2019t come close? Then you ask a stranger <\/strong>to grab your card and then he passes to the next one, and so on, until a person pays the card and then it comes back to you the same way it went away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? \u00bfQu\u00e9 pasa si entras al bus desde la puerta trasera? Entonces te acercas a pagar cerca del conductor. \u00bfQu\u00e9 pasa si el bus est\u00e1 lleno y no puedes acercarte a pagar? Entonces pides a un extra\u00f1o <\/strong>que tome tu tarjeta y la pase al siguiente, y as\u00ed, hasta que una persona pague con tu tarjeta y \u00e9sta regresa de la misma manera que se fue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

?? When I have done that, I just have to memorize the last digits of my card (so I don\u2019t mix it with somebody\u2019s else). Of course, I am speaking from my experience in Ankara here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

?? In Latin America, if you drop a coin on the street I bet you that if somebody finds it, he or she will keep it for him- or herself. On the contrary, in Turkey you can expect that it will remain on the ground for far longer time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? En Latinoam\u00e9rica, si sueltas una moneda en la calle te apuesto que si alguien la encuentra, se la queda para s\u00ed mismo. Al contrario, en Turqu\u00eda puedes esperar que permanecer\u00e1 en el suelo por mucho m\u00e1s tiempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? I was once on a disco in Ankara (the capital) and I realized that there were 2 coins on the ground. After 1 hour, the coins were still there. Nobody bent down to pick them up because in their culture it's present “If it is not you may not take them”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? Una vez estuve en una discoteca en Ankara (la capital) y me di cuenta que hab\u00edan 2 monedas en el suelo. Despu\u00e9s de 1 hora, las monedas todav\u00eda estaban ah\u00ed. Nadie hab\u00eda las recogido porque en su cultura est\u00e1 presente “Si no es tuyo, no debes tomarlas”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
?? In this sense, I feel Turkey safer than many countries. Before traveling here, I was in Spain and Germany for a short trip. Although you can also walk in the night safely, you can still experience pickpocketing at seldom times. For me, there is this \u201ccommon honesty\u201d attached to the culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
?? En este sentido, siento que Turqu\u00eda en m\u00e1s seguro que muchos pa\u00edses. Antes de viajar aqu\u00ed, estuve en Espa\u00f1a y Alemania durante un corto viaje. Aunque t\u00fa puedes viajar por la noche seguro, todav\u00eda puedes encontrarte con carteristas en alguna ocasi\u00f3n. Para m\u00ed, existe esta “honestidad com\u00fan” adyacente en la cultura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
