Every September 16, the Independence of Mexico<\/a> is celebrated in Mexico<\/a> and also in foreign countries. My friends from Mexico invited me on September 19, 2008 to celebrate it when we were living in Germany<\/a>. I assumed they were a bit nostalgic or just fervid patriots. But I liked the idea and I wanted to go to check it out and see how it looked like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Nazi Meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There was a problem for us foreigners. That same night a neo-nazi style meeting in Cologne was going to take place. The NPD<\/a>, the National Democratic Party<\/a> of Germany, considered “the largest neo-Nazi party since 1945.” It was to be expected to come across neo-Nazis and neo-fascists, or similar people, on the street. They are xenophobic par excellence and some are violent. It could have been dangerous to meet these people on the streets of Cologne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exchange families from Zhalo and me forbade us to go anywhere near the downtown, for our safety. The decision seemed correct to me but we still wanted to go. So what did we do, if we had the invitation? Well, we went to the invitation anyway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traveling cautiously<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The party was at Samira's house, located in the downtown from Cologne. Zhalo and I took the tram from Merheim to Barbarossaplatz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
