It seemed that all the effort I did to during the year and half of learning german was finally going to pay off. I felt so confident in myself that I thought that I have learned enough german to communicate with the natives. This couldn't be further from the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Esto no podr\u00eda estar m\u00e1s lejos de la verdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting to know my ‘new' family from the germanic tribes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Brief Introduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? They explained to me that they were a family of father, mother, with 3 children who enjoyed spending time together. They always tried, out of everyday life, to spend at least one meal together a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Me explicaron que eran una familia de padre, madre, con 3 hijos que les gustaba pasar tiempo juntos. Siempre intentaban, por asuntos de la vida diaria, pasar al menos una comida juntos por d\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where I have been chosen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? I was going to be their fourth exchange student that they were going to host. They lived in a neighborhood on the eastern administrative border of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cologne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cologne, Germany<\/a> (German: K\u00f6ln). The neighbourhood from his house is called ‘Br\u00fcck'. His daughter had had her exchange in Thailand in the years 2006-2007. I was not very knowledgeable about Asia in general, so it was interesting to hear what she had to say. Her youngest son was going to have her exchange in my very own city in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecuador\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my homeland, Ecuador<\/a>. He has already started learning Spanish. My exchange dad worked in his own tourism agency and my exchange mom in a recycling and environmental protection company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Iba a ser su cuarto estudiante de intercambio que iban a recibir. Viv\u00edan en en un vecindario en la frontera este administrativa de <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonia_(Alemania)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colonia, Alemania<\/a> (en alem\u00e1n: K\u00f6ln). La barrio de su casa se llama ‘Br\u00fcck'. Su hija hab\u00eda tenido su intercambio en Tailandia en los a\u00f1os 2006-2007. Yo no ten\u00eda mucho conocimiento de Asia en general, as\u00ed que me pareci\u00f3 interesante escuchar lo que ella ten\u00eda que contar. Su hijo menor iba a tener su intercambio en mi misma ciudad de <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecuador\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mi pa\u00eds natal, Ecuador<\/a>. \u00c9l ya hab\u00eda comenzado a aprender espa\u00f1ol. Mi pap\u00e1 de intercambio trabajaba en su propia agencia de turismo y mi mam\u00e1 de intercambio en una compa\u00f1\u00eda de reciclaje y protecci\u00f3n ambiental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I was going to do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? They told me that I was going to attend a school called “<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohg-bensberg.de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Otto Hahn Gymnasium<\/a>” in class 11. They told me that they were very interested in knowing about me, about my country and my hometown, especially the youngest son. From now on for ease, I will refer to them as my Br\u00fcck family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Now I had to prepare to be able to travel. My mother insisted a lot that I should be an ambassador for my homeland and that I should make a good impression. During the months before the trip I learned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>one or two recipes for Ecuadorian food. I realized that I had a long way to go and that I would not have enough time to learn many things that for convenience and procrastination, I had never insisted on learning. I didn't play any musical instrument, nor I played any sport actively or vigorously. All this I should have learned before thinking of a travel abroad program or anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Comprend\u00ed que ten\u00eda un largo camino por recorrer y que no tendr\u00eda suficiente tiempo para aprender muchas cosas que por comodidad y procrastinaci\u00f3n, nunca me hab\u00eda empe\u00f1ado en aprender. No tocaba ning\u00fan instrumento musical, ni practicaba ning\u00fan deporte activamente o con empe\u00f1o. Todo esto deb\u00eda haberlo aprendido antes de pensar en un programa de viajar al extranjero o a cualquier lugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A gift that will change my trip before starting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? My aunt Lucia, in one of these meetings, gave me a gift that would make it possible to remember the experience of the exchange. She gave me a homemade pocket camera; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.com\/electronics\/support\/compact-cameras-dscw-series\/dsc-w110\/manuals?manuals-lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sony DSC-W110<\/a>. I was so, so grateful that the hug was not going to be enough. It gave me the best tool to store my memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Mi t\u00eda Luc\u00eda, en una de estas reuniones, me hizo un regalo que har\u00eda posible recordar la experiencia del intercambio. I had already graduated from high school for about a month and I still didn't realize that there were only a few weeks to go. All the experience that could be thrilled a lot. I didn't feel afraid, resisted to leave or “abandon” my acquaintances from my homeland for a while. Somehow, I knew that I was going to return to Ecuador after a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Todav\u00eda no me daba cuenta que quedaban pocas semanas para irme. Ya llevaba m\u00e1s o menos 1 mes de graduado del colegio. Estaba muy emocionado de todo lo que la experiencia podr\u00eda llegar a ser. No sent\u00eda miedo ni ten\u00eda ganas de quedarme ni \u201cabandonar\u201d a mis conocidos de mi pa\u00eds natal durante un tiempo. When people from my homeland asked me where I was going to go on an exchange, I answered: “Germany”. Sometimes my brother interrupted me saying: “He is going to the higher country.” This made me laugh and confused whoever asked. Sometimes they thought of the United States or Spain. From then on, I would answer the question in the emails: “Greetings from the higher country”, “supreme country” or “great country”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Cuando la gente de mi pa\u00eds natal me preguntaba a d\u00f3nde me iba a ir de intercambio, yo respond\u00eda: \u201cAlemania\u201d. A veces mi hermano, me interrump\u00eda diciendo: \u201c\u00c9l se va al pa\u00eds superior\u201d. Esto me hac\u00eda re\u00edr y de paso confund\u00eda a quien preguntaba.  A veces pensaban en Estados Unidos o Espa\u00f1a. De ah\u00ed en adelante, yo contestaba la pregunta en los correos electr\u00f3nicos: \u201cSaludos desde el pa\u00eds superior\u201d, \u201cpa\u00eds supremo\u201d o \u201cgran pa\u00eds\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just one Concern that I was leaving behind<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? But there was something that I was very worried to leave behind in my homeland: my dog Nacho. He was a golden retriever and he was my loyal and loving dog. I was the only one in the family who considered him as ‘family' and I was the one who pampered him the most. My family would feed him every day, I knew that, but they would not be as caring as me, not even close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Pero s\u00ed hab\u00eda algo que ten\u00eda mucha pena de dejar atr\u00e1s en mi pa\u00eds natal: Mi perro Nacho. Era un golden retriever y era mi perro fiel y cari\u00f1oso. Yo era el \u00fanico de la familia que lo consideraba como ‘familia' y yo era quien m\u00e1s lo mimaba. My parents bought the flight to leave on July 28, 2008. I had a few weeks in Ecuador before leaving. I had to say goodbye to everyone I knew from my homeland, like friends, relatives, neighbors, etc. My family organized some meetings mainly in my house where I lived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? Mis padres compraron el vuelo para salir el 28 de julio de 2008. Ten\u00eda algunas semanas en Ecuador antes de partir. Ten\u00eda que despedirme de todos los que conoc\u00eda de mi pa\u00eds natal, como amigos, parientes, vecinos, etc. Mi familia organiz\u00f3 algunas reuniones principalmente en mi casa donde viv\u00eda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Last Meeting in my homeland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? The last night at my place before the trip, I had gathered to play a video game called “Worms Armaggeddon.” This game is special because when I was a kid, we played it on several occasions. It was like traveling nostalgically back to those days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">?? La \u00faltima noche en mi casa antes del viaje, me hab\u00eda reunido a jugar un videojuego llamado \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Worms_Armageddon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Worms Armaggeddon<\/a>\u201d. Este juego es especial porque cuando era ni\u00f1o, lo jug\u00e1bamos en varias ocasiones.
