This stories are mainly from August 2008, early in my exchange year. A remarkable one was an elusive obvious and there were a few surprises waiting for me and for my other foreigner friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepik.com\/photos\/music\">Music photo created by freepik &#8211; www.freepik.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This post and many more are related to my <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Student_exchange_program\" target=\"_blank\">Exchange Year<\/a> in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\">Germany<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/prueba.voyagellama.com\/tag\/2008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2008<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/prueba.voyagellama.com\/tag\/2009\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2009<\/a>. They invited me to enjoy the night life and I was thrilled. What would it look like? I was not yet 18 but I was 2 months away from being so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-showing-a-confusing-id\">Showing a confusing ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went to a club near Ehrenfeld in the downtown of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cologne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cologne<\/a>. When I was at the door, I showed my ID card from Ecuador and the guards did not understand it at all but they let me pass. Awesome! This was a purpose because my ID is written is Spanish and most germans don&#8217;t speak it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as I can remember, youngters from 16 and 17 years old are allowed to entered only until midnight. I don&#8217;t remember if I came back at 12am that night or later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-were-they-inside\">How were they inside?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What were nightclubs and the night life like in Germany? I will describe them as &#8216;not-so-latin&#8217;. In essence they were \u201cconceptually\u201d similar to those in Ecuador:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dark rooms.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neon_lighting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neon lighting<\/a>.<\/li><li>Bars for alcoholic drinks.<\/li><li>Dance floors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a key difference: dances between couples were rare. I, along with the people I was there, danced in circles. I was still going through the culture shock process and I had to be patient until it became habitual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/0E9K7pBkMSfN6z4mU4CZqk\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This kind of music <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juditova.com\/spotify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I used to listen<\/a> while I was in the computer. My brother was a DJ apprentice, so I listened to such music from time to time. Normally I would something like: &#8220;Hello, I&#8217;m Juditova and I&#8217;m from Ecuador&#8221; since I couldn&#8217;t speak enough German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When these people left, I asked her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Juditova:<\/strong> Who were they? {English}<\/li><li><strong>Host Sister from Br\u00fcck:<\/strong> My friends from the disco. {English}<\/li><li><strong>Juditova:<\/strong> What do you mean by &#8220;<em>Disco Friends&#8221;<\/em>?<\/li><li><strong>Host Sister from Br\u00fcck:<\/strong> People with whom I only meet inside discos, parties. I never see them outside of these meetings.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-only-inside-the-disco\">Only inside the disco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that she would not feel at ease or comfortable calling one of these people to hang out or make plans other than the &#8220;disco&#8221; of course. They only talk to each other at this events or similar social gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterwards, perhaps the next day, I realized that I would not call everyone I know in my life to make plans, such as going for a walk in the mountains, going to the movies, or having them join me for lunch at a certain restaurant. So to speak, they are simply &#8220;friends of other friends&#8221; or people from social events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sounds obvious for me when I heard it but I had never conceptualized it. It was some kind of an epiphany for me. I had reflected on something so elusive because it has been in front of me all adolescence but I had never realized this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the months went by, I would find out more about myself in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-was-the-night-life-in-my-homeland\">How was the Night Life in my Homeland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in Ecuador, previously to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Student_exchange_program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exchange year<\/a>, you had to be at least 18 years old to enter to disco, when you are an adult in the eyes of the state. A few times I managed a way to sneak inside but once I had to hide inside the warehouse so the police didn&#8217;t find me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But teenage parties at someone&#8217;s house were much more popular and teenagers were allowed.
