No siempre ser\u00e1 completamente seguro caminar libremente sin alguna consecuencia. Aqu\u00ed te presento algunas historias m\u00edas y de otras personas que he escuchado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? On October 11 of 2019, I was walking in the zone of Beyo\u011flu in Istanbul. I walked during the night, happily to know that I could do it during the night and there wasn't any danger. But, I eyes caught my attention about something strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? El 11 de Octubre de 2019, estaba caminando por la zona de Beyo\u011flu en Estambul. Camin\u00e9 por la noche contento porque pod\u00eda hacerlo sin preocuparme de alg\u00fan peligro. Pero, mis ojos captaron algo extra\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? I saw in the facade of a building, womens' shoes hanged in the wall. There were many of them and it occupied two walls, from top to bottom. All shoes, had tremendous good lighting. As I stepped closer, I realized this was a memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Vi en la fachada de un edificio zapatos de mujeres colgados en el pared. Hab\u00eda muchos de ellos y ocupaban 2 paredes, desde arriba hasta abajo. Todos los zapatos, estaban super bien iluminados. Cuando me acerqu\u00e9, me di cuenta que era un memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? I came closer to a sign called “\u0130S\u0130MS\u0130Z” (UNTITLED). This was a memorial about 440 women, who lost their lives during 2018 alone. Apparently, they were killed by men, just due the fact they were women. I remained in silence for a while, thinking about the suffering that this caused to 440 families and counting. Did this men received the whole weight of the law? Such insecurity these women will feel in this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Me acerqu\u00e9 a un letrero que dec\u00eda “\u0130S\u0130MS\u0130Z” (SIN T\u00cdTULO). \u00c9ste es el memorial sobre 440 mujeres, que perdieron su vida s\u00f3lo en 2018. Aparentemente, fueron asesinadas por hombres solamente por ser mujeres. Permanec\u00ed en silencio por un rato, pensando en el sufrimiento que esto caus\u00f3 a m\u00e1s de 440 familias. \u00bfRecibieron estos hombres todo el peso de la ley? Qu\u00e9 inseguridad sentir\u00e1n las mujeres en este pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? My girlfriend visited Turkey the first time during summer of 2015 with her aunt and 2 female cousins. It was hot (above 35\u00baC) in Istanbul. They were tired of the trip and they were also lying on a park near the Bosphorus. My girlfriend carried in her backpack:<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Mi enamorada visit\u00f3 Turqu\u00eda por primera vez durante el verano de 2015 con su t\u00eda y 2 primas. Estaba caliente (sobre los 35\u00baC) en Estambul. Ellas estaban cansadas del viaje y estaban echadas en un parque cerca del B\u00f3sforo. My enamorada ten\u00eda en su mochila:<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? 2 foreign girls (under 12 years old) approached to my girlfriend asking for directions. She said “I don't speak turkish<\/strong>“. Meanwhile, one of her cousins saw a little girl running with a backpack and she shouted: “Isn't that backpack yours?!<\/strong>“. It was! So all of them run to the little girl who stole the backpack and grab it back. One of the cousins who actually spoke turkish, with all her lungs, yelled at them and told them to get lost!<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? 2 ni\u00f1as extranjeras (menores de 12 a\u00f1os) se acercaron a mi novia preguntando por direcciones. Ella dijo “No hablo turco<\/strong>“. Mientras tanto, una de sus primas vio una ni\u00f1a corriendo con una mochila y grit\u00f3 “\u00bfNo es esa tu mochila?<\/strong>“. Lo era! As\u00ed corrieron todas donde estaba la ni\u00f1a que rob\u00f3 la mochila y lo tomaron otra vez. Una de las primas que s\u00ed hablaba turco, con todos su pulmones, les mand\u00f3 al carajo y que desaparecieran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? During a time period while I was in Turkey (perhaps January 2020) there were reports of women being killed around the whole country. Perhaps due femicide. Naturally, women that I knew began to worry about getting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Durante un per\u00edodo de tiempo cuando yo estaba en Turqu\u00eda (tal vez enero de 2020) hab\u00edan reportes de mujeres asesinadas alrededor del pa\u00eds. Probablemente por feminicidio. Naturalmente, mujeres que yo conoc\u00eda empezaron a preocuparse al salir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? In two circumstances, a female turkish friend asked me if I could escort her to her dormitory. Once, after a party in a disco (around 1am). The next time, it was around 7pm in the evening in weekdays. Although I was walking with her in the middle of the night, there was nothing to worry about but that's my point of view. Apparently, in herself there was this “just in case” justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? En 2 circunstancias, una amiga turca me pidi\u00f3 que la escolte hasta su dormitorio. La primera vez, despu\u00e9s de una fiesta en la discoteca (alrededor de 1am). La siguiente vez, alrededor de 7pm de un noche entre semana. A pesar de que yo caminaba con ella en medio de la noche, no hab\u00eda nada de que preocuparse pero ese era mi punto de vista. Aparentemente, dentro de s\u00ed misma era una justificaci\u00f3n “por si acaso”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? But even now, in the middle of 2020, the reports of femicide have increased to the quantity of 1 murder per day in Turkey. Not good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Pero incluso ahora, en la mitad del 2020, hay reportes de feminicidio que han incrementado a 1 asesinato por d\u00eda en Turqu\u00eda. Nada bueno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Interesting enough, the first experience that I had with Turkey didn't talk well of it. As you might be wondering… it was in a touristic place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Imag\u00ednate que mi primera experiencia que tuve en Turqu\u00eda no hablaba bien de s\u00ed misma. Tal vez ya adivinaste donde ocurri\u00f3… fue en un sitio tur\u00edstico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? The day before my arrival to Istanbul, my girlfriend shared me her advice about taking a taxi from Taksim to the hotel and she clearly stated “It should cost around 20 TRY (3,63 USD)”. Great! Now I have a price reference. She said that Taksim and the hotel were ‘close'<\/strong> which I didn't know how much that actually means in a 15 millon people city (and growing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? El d\u00eda anterior a mi llegada a Estambul, mi enamorada me aconsej\u00f3 tomar un taxi desde Taksim al hotel y dijo claramente “Deber\u00eda costar alrededor de 20 TRY (3,63 USD)”. \u00a1Genial! Ahora tengo una referencia de precio. Ella dijo que Taksim y el hotel estaban ‘cerca' lo cu\u00e1l no sab\u00eda cu\u00e1nto pod\u00eda ser en una ciudad de 15 millones de habitantes (y creciendo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? I finally arrived to Taksim (at 12am) and there was tons of taxi drivers offering a ride (naturally). I asked for one, I gave him the address and he replied with “40 EUR (43,95 USD)”<\/strong>. There was something wrong here. WHY IT WAS SO EXPENSIVE?! I remembered that a week ago I paid a taxi around 15 EUR (16,48 USD) for a 10-minute trip in Berlin (and you know, it's Berlin!). This taxi driver insisted on the 40 EUR but instead I offered “40 TRY (7,27 USD)”<\/strong>. He didn't accepted so asked for another taxi driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Finalmente llegu\u00e9 a Taksim (a la 12am) y hab\u00edan algunos taxistas ofreciendo una carrera (obviamente). Pregunt\u00e9 a uno, le di la direcci\u00f3n del hotel y despu\u00e9s respondi\u00f3 “40 EUR (43,95 USD)”<\/strong>. Algo no andaba bien. \u00a1\u00bfPOR QU\u00c9 ERA TAN CARO?! Recuerdo que hace una semana pagu\u00e9 por un taxi 15 EUR (16,48 USD) en Berlin y la carrera dur\u00f3 unos 10 minutos (y t\u00fa sabes, \u00a1es Berl\u00edn!). Este taxista insisti\u00f3 en los 40 EUR pero yo ofrec\u00ed “40 TRY (7,27 USD)<\/strong>“. \u00c9l no acept\u00f3 as\u00ed que pregunt\u00e9 a otro taxista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? The next one, also offered a similar fare but I wasn't interested. He replied (with a terrible but yet understandable English): “Ok, I make you this deal. Let's go with the taximeter”.<\/strong> That sounds better! The price should be then proportional to the distance, so I accepted. He grabbed my suitcases and placed them in the taxi and we drove towards my hotel. Everything was nice except that I was taking too long. Why? I thought it was ‘close'<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? El siguiente ofreci\u00f3 una tarifa similar pero tampoco estaba interesado. El contest\u00f3 (con un terrible pero entendible Ingl\u00e9s): “A ver, te har\u00e9 esta oferta. Vamos con el tax\u00edmetro”<\/strong> \u00a1Eso son\u00f3 mejor! El precio deber\u00eda ser proporcional a la distancia, as\u00ed que acept\u00e9. \u00c9l tom\u00f3 mis maletas y la meti\u00f3 en el taxi y nos fuimos hacia el hotel. Todo parec\u00eda estar bien excepto que nos est\u00e1bamos demorando demasiado. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9? Cre\u00eda que era ‘cerca<\/strong>‘.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? I arrived to the hotel (which was actually a room at airBNB<\/a>) and the taximeter showed 50 TRY (9,09 USD)<\/strong>. After I paid, the receptionist showed up to pick me up. I explained that we took a little long and that I paid such quantity to come here, since we already talked before by cellphone. With my story, the friendly smile from the receptionist disappeared. Did I said something wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Llegu\u00e9 al hotel (el cual realmente era una habitaci\u00f3n en airBNB<\/a>) y el tax\u00edmetro mostr\u00f3 50 TRY (9,09 USD)<\/strong>. Despu\u00e9s de que pagu\u00e9, el recepcionista lleg\u00f3 para recogerme. Yo expliqu\u00e9 porqu\u00e9 me hab\u00eda demorado tanto y que hab\u00eda pagado esa cantidad de dinero, ya que hab\u00edamos hablado anteriormente por tel\u00e9fono. Cont\u00e1ndole esto, la sonrisa amistosa desapareci\u00f3 de su cara. \u00bfFue algo que dije?<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? The receptionist and the taxi driver began arguing, like complaining! The taxi driver was concerned about something. Since they were talking all the time in Turkish, I couldn't understand anything. Finally, the taxi driver was pissed off and wanted to give some money back but the receptionist insisted to take the money and go away. In the end, the taxi driver left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? El recepcionista y el taxista empezaron a discutir, \u00a1c\u00f3mo si se estuvieran quejando! El taxista estaba preocupado por algo. Ya que hablaban en turco todo el tiempo, no pod\u00eda entender nada. Finalmente, el taxi estaba molesto y quer\u00eda darme el dinero otra vez pero el recepcionista dijo que se fuera simplemente. Al final, el taxista se fue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? It turns out that the taxi driver was driving around for extra kilometers just to make the taximeter to increase the pay amount. What the receptionist was arguing with the taxi driver (as he told me later) was that he collected this money by deceiving another human being. Just because he was foreigner?<\/em> This money wasn't going to make him rich or me poor. But he said to him “Does your family will welcome this money in your house?<\/em>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Resulta que el taxista estaba manejando unos kil\u00f3metros extras y dando vueltas innecesariamente para incrementar el costo de la carrera. Lo que el recepcionista estaba discutiendo (que despu\u00e9s me explic\u00f3) fue que obtuve ese dinero enga\u00f1ando a otro ser humano. \u00bfS\u00f3lo porque era extranjero?<\/em> Ese dinero no le iba a ser ni rico ni pobre. Pero le dijo “\u00bfTu familia recibir\u00e1 este dinero en tu casa<\/em>?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? As I learned later, this is called ‘haram<\/em>‘ which means sin. Deceiving, stealing or trick someone with money is considered by the turks to be the worst scum and such person is practically worthless as human being. Of course, this gives a bad image of insecurity to the country. Although there are exceptions among them, you will find this ‘cultural honesty' in most places you visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ?? Como aprender\u00eda posteriormente, esto se llama ‘haram<\/em>‘ que significa pecado. Enga\u00f1ar, robar o estafar a alguien con dinero es considerado por los turcos ser la peor escoria y dicha persona es pr\u00e1cticamente inservible como ser humano. Por supuesto, esto da una mala imagen de inseguridad al pa\u00eds. A pesar de haber excepciones sobre esto: encontrar\u00e1s esta “cultura de honestidad” en muchos lugares que visites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ??
